National Assembly to elect prime minister today

Date:

The National Assembly is all set to choose a new leader of the house, with Shehbaz Sharif emerging as the most powerful candidate of the joint opposition after the ousting of former prime minister Imran Khan through a vote of no-confidence.

Shehbaz Sharif submitted his nomination papers to the National Assembly Secretariat on Sunday for the top slot.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi has also filed his nomination papers for the slot of the prime minister.

Earlier on Saturday night, the joint opposition passed the no-confidence resolution against Imran Khan after a lengthy session stretching over 14 hours.

The PTI has also hinted en masse resignation from the National Assembly in protest against the ouster of Imran Khan through what they alleged foreign instigated conspiracy. The joint opposition rebuffed the PTI allegations.

Imran has called a meeting of the parliamentary committee today at 12 noon to decide about the en masse resignation from the National Assembly.

The Cabinet Division de-notified 52 members of the federal cabinet including 25 federal ministers and four ministers of state after Imran Khan lost the majority following the no-confidence motion against him sailed through the lower house of the parliament.

Sources said that the PTI has decided to give a tough time to the upcoming government through street protests if Shehbaz Sharif clinched the premier slot.

Shehbaz Sharif met with Pakistan Peoples Party leaders Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazal Rehman and discussed with them the prevailing political situation. Sources said that the leadership of the opposition parties have assured Shehbaz of full support in his attempt to clinch the top slot of the premiership.

According to the National Assembly Secretariat issued agenda, NA session for today for the election of the prime minister will take place at 2 pm. “Election of the Prime Minister as required by Article 91 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, read with rule 32 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007,” said the order of the day.
