The US State Department on Tuesday said that there was absolutely no truth to the allegations against them of conspiring for a regime change in Pakistan.
In his weekly news briefing Spokesperson for US State Department Ned Price said that US supports the peaceful upholding of constitutional democratic principles.
“That is the case in Pakistan; it is the case around the world,” he asserted.
He went on to clarify that the US does not support one political party over another.
“We support the broader principles, the principles of rule of law, of equal justice under the law,” he added.
Price stated that the US was closely following developments in Pakistan.
“We respect, we support Pakistan’s constitutional process and the rule of law,” he said.
The statement comes after Prime Minister Imran Khan had leveled allegations against the US of meddling in Pakistan’s internal affairs and alleged that the no-confidence motion tabled against him in the National Assembly was a US funded move.
The PM’s statements were endorsed by the National Security Meeting which expressed serious concern over the non-diplomatic language used in the cable, saying it was tantamount to interference in the internal matters of Pakistan. The NSC then decided to issue a demarche to the United States.
NSC’s statement on the issue was later used by the Deputy Speaker National Assembly to dismiss the resolution tabled against the premier.
In response to the Troika meeting held in China earlier last month, the spokesperson said that the US, China, and Russia and Pakistan have a good degree of leverage with the Taliban, and the “extended Troika has, in the past, been a constructive forum, and it is critical that the international community remain united in its approach to Afghanistan”.
“It is especially critical with countries that have a good deal of leverage with the Taliban,” he said adding that it was incumbent on all of these countries to use that leverage to push the Taliban in the right direction.
“When it comes to this issue, our interests are aligned with the members of the Troika, and that includes when it comes to the imperative of seeing girls return to secondary schools and encouraging inclusive governance”.
“We want to see to it that those are messages the Taliban received not only from us, not only from our European partners, with whom we’re coordinating closely on Afghanistan and engagement with the Taliban, but also from a broader collection of countries, and certainly those countries that do have a good deal of leverage,” he added.
