After much debate and drama, things had only gotten back on track with Hamza Shehbaz being sworn-in as the chief minister of Punjab only for another crisis looming.
The latest crisis involves PTI government installed governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema who has refused to step down even after the cabinet division issued a notification of him being sacked.
The federal government had sent a summary for the removal of governor Cheema to the president on April 17.
As per the Constitution, the summary would take effect automatically without any decision from the president after the stipulated time period. After the completion of the constitutional period of the summary, the Cabinet Division issued the notification.
However, Cheema claims that the summary for his removal sent by the premier to the president was turned down owing to ‘exceptional circumstances’.
In a tweet, he termed the notification unconstitutional and would consult legal experts on the matter.
Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Imran Khan has urged the Supreme Court to take notice of the “blatant violation” of the Constitution and law in Punjab after a late-night federal government notification saw Omar Sarfraz Cheema removed as the province’s governor.
In a statement, Imran demanded the top court take “immediate notice of the blatant violation of the Constitution and the law in Punjab”.
