Opposition lambasts ‘civilian martial law’

Date:

The joint opposition cried foul on Monday and termed the government’s move unconstitutional.

Addressing the media, PML-N Chief Shehbaz Sharif accused Imran Khan of imposing a ‘civilian martial law’ and said that April 3 would be remembered as black day in the history of Pakistan.

The PML-N chief stated that the PTI used Article 5 to prevent themselves from the embarrassment of having to lose the no-confidence motion.

He further questioned why these objections were not raised earlier.

“The four-year tenure of the former PTI-led government is a period of an individual government, totalitarian and fascist,” he added.

Speaking about the threat letter, Shehbaz said that if the letter was true why did Pakistan’s Ambassador Asad Majeed invite the US officials for his farewell dinner.

He questioned why Majeed thank Donald Lu on Twitter if he was involved in threatening the country.

Shehbaz further alleged that Imran had approached the opposition ahead of the no confidence motion saying that he was ready to dissolve the assembly if the opposition took back the resolution.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said that Imran Khan sabotaged the Constitution to satisfy his ego.

He further went on to say that the premier had no idea what had happened and how his decision had damaged the country and the Constitution.

“Responsibility of protecting the constitution lies on the people of Pakistan and not just the parties,” he added.

Bilawal shared that PPP workers and supporters are happy that the rule of the “selected” government has finally ended; however, he said that political parties, like PPP, PML-N, etc, will never be happy if extra-constitutional steps are taken because “we abide by the laws of the constitution.”

He urged the Supreme Court to constitute a larger bench to hear the case.

JUI-F leader Maulana Asad Mahmood said that PM Imran Khan was trying to pressurise the institutions.

Mahmood said that the joint opposition will not accept international pressure being imposed under the guise of a “threat letter”.

He suggested that the higher courts of Pakistan hold him PM Khan accountable for his statements regarding the credibility of judges.

MQM’s Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui also said that Imran Khan had committed political suicide and sabotaged the Constitution to save his self.
