The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has notified the reduction in the electricity tariff by Rs5 per unit.
The regulator allowed the Power Division to formally notify Rs5 per unit reduction in the rate of the electricity following prime minister’s February 28 announcement of a reduction in the price of the electricity for all consumers except for the lifeline consumers as special relief.
“The instant decision is being intimated to the federal government for the purpose of notification in the official gazette within 30 days as per the Nepra Act,” said the regulator in a letter issued to the power, finance and cabinet divisions.
The regulator said that since the government had not sought any change in tariff determined by the NEPRA but had committed an Rs106 billion supplementary grant in the budget for four months at the rate of Rs26.5bn per month, the regulator had no objection to the discounted tariff, said a report published in a leading newspaper.
It said that the Ministry of Energy had requested approval of the relief package announced by the premier about the reduction in the tariff. The regulator said that the request was instantly approved.
Earlier, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet had approved an Rs136 billion subsidy for electricity consumers after the prime minister announced an incentive package regarding the reduction in the price of electricity by Rs5 per unit.
The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) had submitted a summary to the ECC regarding the reduction in the price of electricity. The ECC had approved Rs136 billion for the PM’s relief package of Rs5 per unit by way of reduction in electricity charges base rate for the relief period of four months (March 2022 to June 2022). The relief package will be applicable to all commercial and domestic non-ToU consumers having monthly consumption up to 700 units, excluding lifeline consumers.
