The Islamabad High Court on Monday directed the government and concerned authorities to not harass Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders hearing a petition filed by Fawad Chaudhry in connection with several blasphemy cases filed against the party’s leaders.
The IHC directed interior secretary to make sure that PTI leaders were not harassed by the police or any other investigation agency.
It also barred the government from taking further action against PTI leaders till the next hearing of the case. The court also sent a copy of the orders to the National Assembly Secretariat.
Fawad Chaudhry on Monday submitted a writ petition in Islamabad High Court calling for cases registered against Pakistan Tehreek-s-Insaf’s leadership under the country’s blasphemy laws to be termed “illegal”.
Pakistani pilgrims hurled slogans at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation during their visit to Masjid-e-Nabwi.
The incident drew a lot of criticism and was also condemned by PTI leaders however, the government accused the party of orchestrating the incident.
Fawad, in his petition, said that the newly appointed interior minister had been targeting the PTI leadership and had also “openly threatened” them with dire consequences.
He said that through “reliable sources”, he had come to know that the incumbent government had decided to teach him and other PTI leaders “a lesson they must not forget”.
Fawad alleged that Sana had ordered to have him and other PTI leader nominated/booked in false criminal cases registered in various parts of the country. The petition noted that one FIR had been registered in Faisalabad while applications had been filed in Burewala and Islamabad.
