The senior-most Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr Murtaza Syed, assumed the office of acting Governor of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday.
He has more than 20 years of experience in macroeconomic research and policymaking.
Dr Murtaza Syed also worked with the International Monetary Fund for 16 years before joining the State Bank of Pakistan.
It may be mentioned that the term of former Governor State Bank of Pakistan, Dr Reza Baqir ended last Wednesday.
Reza Baqir stepped down as governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), after the government declined to renew his three-year term.
The government has not yet appointed a permanent replacement. Earlier Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said in a tweet that, by law, the most senior deputy governor will stand in as governor.
“Therefore, Dr Murtaza Syed, an eminently qualified economist with rich IMF experience, will take over as governor SBP,” Ismail had said. “I wish him the best in his new role.
